Welcome to the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems

Biological systems are remarkable for their capability to survive and adapt to changing environments. What are the principles and mechanisms that enable such adaptability? How could they be translated into technologies that provide new or better functionalities? How can software and robotic models help us understanding, and ultimately improving, life and the environment?

These are the questions that animate the research performed at the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems (LIS). Founded in 2005 by Prof. Dario Floreano, the laboratory activities currently cover three interconnected research areas: biomimetic robots, artificial intelligence, and theoretical and experimental studies of biological systems.

The Laboratory of Intelligent Systems also offers several courses at master and doctoral level in robotics and artificial intelligence and hosts an average of 15 undergraduate/master students and 15 PhD students in an intellectually stimulating and interdisciplinary environment. LIS alumni are employed by top universities and high-innovation companies world-wide or have started spin-off companies.

The Laboratory of Intelligent System is a major partner of the Swiss National Center for Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics, a nation-wide strategic initiative bringing together 17 research laboratories across Switzerland to create new opportunities for research, education, and technology transfer in human-oriented robotics.

If you are interested in joining the lab, please check the Open positions. We accept only PhD students that have been admitted by an EPFL doctoral program (you should indicate the name of Prof. Floreano in the application forms). For postdoctoral researchers, please send your full CV, sample publications, and three reference names directly to Prof. Floreano.
